A Guide to Writing a Blog Post with AI

Parthi Loganathan
CEO of Letterdrop, former Product Manager on Google Search

Writing technology has evolved from cuneiform writing using a stylus to the invention of moveable type to the first ballpoint pen to the word processor. AI writing is just another step.

In this article, we're going to focus on writing blog posts and articles with AI. This type of content can be the primary driver of new customers to your business through SEO. AI can help content marketers overcome writer's block and go from blank page to a content brief. Or take it a step further and turn that brief into a long-form article. That would save your marketing team dozens of hours. Who would say no to that?

AI is going to change the way content marketers write, and we can't ignore it. Start thinking about using AI to your advantage. Don't worry; it's not going to replace you. But you'll be at a serious disadvantage if you don't learn to use the tool. It's like refusing to learn how to use a computer in the 1980s.

What Is GPT-3?

The third-generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT-3) is an AI model that is better at creating content with a language structure — human or machine language — than anything that's come before it.

It's also scalable and efficient at handling large amounts of different types of data, including text, images, and video.

What Does GPT-3 Do and How Does It Work?

GPT-3 can do anything with language structure. This includes answering questions, writing essays, summarizing long text, translating languages, taking memos, and creating computer code.

The simple version is GPT-3 is an AI that predicts language. It's designed to predict the next useful phrase you'll need to finish your paragraph, for example.

You enter a prompt and let it work its magic. It can, in fact, write a blog post like this one, but you'll still want to edit whatever a GPT-3 tool produces. To be fair, you'll want to edit a blog post written by a person, too — even a really smart person.

Writing a Blog with the GPT-3 AI in Letterdrop

Letterdrop is an all-in-one content marketing platform that helps content marketers collaborate and produce quality content faster.

One of its features is the AI blog generator — a tool that uses GPT-3 to write articles. Unlike many other AI writing tools, it's interactive so you can guide the AI to create actually usable content. Let's take a look at how you can use it as a sparring partner to go from keyword to a full blog post in minutes. Here's a demo of it in action.

Enter Your Keyword

‎The first step to using Letterdrop's blog generator is entering your target keyword. The idea that defines what your content is about is your primary keyword. From an SEO perspective, this is the word or phrase that you'd type into search engines like Google as your search query.

Once you enter keywords into the blog generator, type in a working title. The AI will help you generate more title ideas. You can pick one of its suggestions and edit it until you have a title that you're happy with.

Let AI Generate Section Headers for Your Blog Post

Section headers are important to structure your article. They give you an outline and provide your audience with a clear overview of the topics you'll cover, making it easy for them to skim. From a writing perspective, it helps you organize coherent thoughts together and form a narrative.

Letterdrop generates some section headers for you based on your keyword and title. It will also show you some more options in the right pane. If you want to see even more section header ideas, you can click "Generate more," and it'll give you more suggestions.

You can rearrange the section headers in the order that makes the most sense. You can also delete suggested section headers that you think are irrelevant or redundant. If any of the headers aren't to your liking, you can edit them or add your own manually too when the AI falls short.

Once done, click next.

On the next page is the Section outline. It has three pieces:

Generate an Intro and Conclusion with AI

The blog generator will give you a suggested introduction and conclusion. Like any other well-written blog, the introduction sets the tone of your article, and the conclusion ties everything together.

‎You can always click on "Generate more," and the blog generator will give you more suggestions to choose from.

Generate Talking Points for Each Section Header with AI

To make things easier, the blog generator generates bullet points for each of the section headers you generated in the previous step.

‎You can generate as many bullet points as you want until you find the right set of talking points for a section. You can edit, delete, and re-arrange them until you're happy.

At this point, you have a pretty strong outline.

You have a title, an introduction, some H2 section headers, talking points for each header, and a conclusion. You could give this to a writer, and they could write something really good for you.

But what if the GPT-3 tool could do more and take us all the way? Letterdrop's blog generator can do just that.

Fleshing Out Bullet Points Into Paragraphs with AI

Once you have your bullet points for a section, you can generate paragraphs for each out of these talking points.

The blog generator will generate a couple of paragraphs for each bullet point. They're categorized under their respective bullet point in the right pane. Choose the paragraphs you like best, and they'll be copied. You can edit, delete, and rearrange paragraphs to form a cohesive section. You can always generate more paragraphs to give yourself more options.

Once you're done, you can click "Generate" to complete the blog generation wizard and copy your text into the Letterdrop CMS for final editing.

Editing Your AI-Generated Blog Post

When writing blog posts with AI, you still need to proofread and edit your work, just like you do with a human writer. Your AI-generated blog posts may not always be accurate or well written. AI tools can make mistakes, just like a human writer.

Also, as mentioned earlier, GPT-3 is just finding the most probabilistic text given your inputs. It's not 100% correct or accurate. You still need a human to fact-check work.

The ‎Letterdrop editor or CMS is feature-packed and can help you take your AI-generated blog post and go the extra mile.

  1. Spell-check and catch poorly structured sentences with Grammarly Business.
  2. SEO-optimize your post using the built-in SEO optimizer.
  3. Compare your post to other top pages on Google to see if you're missing any key points.
  4. Check reading level, find long sentences, and eliminate passive voice with our readability checker.
  5. Check for plagiarism in case the AI copied something off the internet.
