How to Use an AI Agent for BDR Prospecting (And What Actually Works)
Every BDR team is trying to answer the same question at the start of every week: who should I reach out to, and what should I say?
AI agents are starting to change how that question gets answered. Not by replacing the BDR, but by giving them better information to start from. Here is what actually works and what to watch out for.
What an AI Agent Can Do for a BDR Today
Account Prioritisation
The biggest time sink in BDR work is not sending messages. It is figuring out who to send them to. An AI agent connected to your sales intelligence data can surface the accounts showing the most relevant buying signals this week: intent activity, recent company changes, competitor movements, or re-engagement signals from past conversations.
Instead of manually combing through a list of 200 accounts, the BDR starts with the 15 that actually matter this week, with context on why each one is worth reaching out to now.
Research and Context Gathering
Before a BDR sends a message, they should know what is relevant about the prospect. What are they working on? What has changed recently? What problem does your product solve for their specific situation?
AI agents are fast at this. Give them a company name and a contact name and they can pull recent news, role context, and relevant signals in seconds. What used to take 10 minutes per account takes 30 seconds.
Message Drafting and Personalisation
AI agents can draft outreach messages, but the quality depends entirely on what context they are working with. A draft based on "company name + role" will be generic. A draft based on "this person's company just showed up in competitor activity, their team recently expanded their sales org, and their last engagement with your content was three weeks ago" will be specific.
The data quality is everything. This is why the AI agent's connection to your sales intelligence layer matters more than the AI model itself.
What AI Agents Cannot Do Yet
It is worth being honest about the limits:
• AI agents cannot replace judgment. A BDR who understands the buyer's context, the competitive landscape, and the nuances of the deal will always outperform a BDR who just copies what the AI drafts.
• AI agents surface what is in the data. If your data is stale or incomplete, the recommendations will be too.
• Personalization at scale is still hard. The best outreach feels like it came from a person who actually thought about the recipient. AI can get you 70% of the way there. The last 30% still needs a human touch.
The Workflow That Actually Works
Here is the BDR workflow we have seen work well with AI agents:
Monday Morning: Account Prioritisation
Ask your AI agent: "Which accounts should I focus on this week and why?" Get a prioritized list with context on each account. Spend 15 minutes reviewing and deciding which ones you are going after.
Pre-Outreach: Context Brief
For each account you are reaching out to, ask the AI agent for a quick context brief: what is relevant about this company right now, what is the best angle, what is the right persona to target. This replaces manual research.
Message Draft: Starting Point, Not Final Draft
Use the AI draft as a starting point. Read it. Rewrite the parts that feel generic. Add the observation that only a human would notice. Send something you would be comfortable putting your name on.
End of Week: Performance Review
Ask the AI agent which of your outreach this week got responses and what those accounts had in common. Build your own pattern recognition on top of the data.
How Letterdrop Fits Into This Workflow
Letterdrop is the sales intelligence layer that makes AI agent prospecting actually work.
When your AI agent is connected to Letterdrop via our MCP server, it has access to your real-time intent signals, your outbound performance data, and your contact intelligence. Not just generic company information from the web.

That is the difference between an AI agent that gives you useful, specific recommendations and one that gives you a polished version of what you could have guessed anyway.
